I have a 2 1/2 year old son who is about to start occupational therapy for SID next week. We are fortunate enough to have found this out early on. He was already in therapy for speech and his therapist gave me information about SID. I saw the checklist and a light bulb went off, this was him! He falls under sensory seeking and low registration. I know how frustrating it can be to wonder why your child is the only one doing odd things.
As I understand it ADHD & SID can be confused quite often, and sometimes overlap. An amazing book you should read is The Out-of-Sync Child. It really helps! In fact all parents should read it.
I am guessing that your son is to old for the birth to 3 program at MRDD. Unfortunately for sensory issue there aren't too many avenues to go. I called the director of the birth to three program and she suggests talking to the school again. She recommends going into the school and observing when he is on the playground, at lunch, in the classroom and really getting an idea of when he is successful and when he is stressed. Also, find out from the teacher what areas they feel he is having problems with. When you go in to talk to them try getting the principal, counselor and teacher all together. I would print out a checklist of SID with the highlighted signs your child has. Also do a highlighted list for ADHD. Maybe take these lists back into the pediatrician and ask if you can at least have them write a prescription for an evaluation at the developmental clinic at Children's hospital. It's very easy to say ADHD and hand over a scrip, which is why way too many kids are prematurely diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. You are doing the right thing! Like you said, you know your child. You are his best advocate.
